For years, the mental model for WeTransfer's free tier was simple: anything up to 2 GB (later 3 GB), as often as you needed. That model is out of date. Since WeTransfer restructured its plans in December 2024, the free tier is capped at 10 transfers or 3 GB total per rolling 30-day window — whichever runs out first (as of July 2026). Not 3 GB per transfer with unlimited sends. 3 GB, total, per month.
If you send files occasionally, you may never notice. If you deliver client work every week, you have probably already hit the wall — and the upgrade path leads to a subscription. What changed in December 2024
WeTransfer's plan restructure did three things (all figures as of July 2026):
The free plan gained a monthly volume cap. The old framing — free transfers up to 3 GB each — became 10 transfers or 3 GB of total volume per rolling 30-day window, whichever you exhaust first, with a maximum of 3 GB per transfer and download links that expire within 3 days. WeTransfer's own help center and blog describe the new limits this way; this is not a third-party reading of fine print.
Pro and Premium disappeared. If you search for "WeTransfer Pro pricing" today, you are researching a plan that no longer exists. Both were folded into a single Ultimate plan: unlimited transfers, up to 1 TB per transfer, custom expiration, password protection, and branded transfer pages. A monthly-billed fetch of their pricing page showed $25/month; annual billing brings it lower, so "around $23–25/month" is the fair range.
A cheaper Starter plan appeared. Starter allows 10 transfers or 300 GB total per 30-day window. It launched at $6.99/month in December 2024; as of July 2026, expect $8–10/month depending on billing cycle (USD; WeTransfer's pricing page renders regionally, so your figure may differ).
None of this is unreasonable business. Storing and serving other people's files costs real money, and WeTransfer is under no obligation to do it free forever. But the free plan's identity changed from "generous default" to "trial-sized," and that changes who it is for.
The math if you send client files weekly
Say you are a photographer, editor, or designer who delivers work weekly. A single wedding gallery, a video draft, or a layered design file easily runs 2–3 GB. Under the current free plan:
- One 3 GB delivery consumes the entire month's volume. The remaining nine transfer slots are unusable — the 3 GB total cap has already been hit.
- Ten small deliveries also end the month, even if they total a few hundred megabytes.
- Each link dies within 3 days, so a client who downloads late means re-sending — which costs another transfer from the same budget.
The design intent is clear: regular senders are Starter customers now. At $8–10/month that is a defensible price for 300 GB of hosted transfer — but it is worth knowing that the alternative to paying is no longer "just use the free tier more carefully." For weekly senders, the free tier no longer covers the job.
"Encrypted" — but who holds the key?
WeTransfer's security page describes its model in one sentence: files are encrypted when they are transferred (TLS) and when they are stored (AES-256). Both halves are true, and both matter — this is a professionally run service, not a security horror story.
But look at where the key lives. With server-side encryption, your file is decrypted and re-encrypted at the boundary of the provider's infrastructure, using keys the provider holds. WeTransfer can, technically, read what you send — as can anyone who compels them to, or any bug or breach that exposes their key material. You are trusting a policy, not a mathematical property.
With end-to-end encryption, the file is encrypted on your machine before anything leaves it, and the key travels only to your recipient — never to the service in the middle. In Zenden's case the key rides in the link's #fragment (the one part of a URL browsers never transmit to a server) or in a passphrase you share yourself. The transfer is AES-256-GCM with per-direction keys derived via HKDF, and whatever passes through Zenden's relay or Cloud Link storage is ciphertext the server cannot read. The difference is a single sentence: server-side encryption means the provider promises not to look; end-to-end encryption means the provider cannot look.
The July 2025 terms-of-service episode, told fairly
In July 2025, WeTransfer published updated terms (effective that August) whose clause 6.3 granted the company a "perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable license" to user content — including language about improving "machine learning models that enhance our content moderation process." The backlash from photographers, filmmakers, and designers was immediate and loud.
To WeTransfer's credit, the walk-back was fast. Within roughly two weeks the clause was rewritten to a plain "royalty-free license to use your Content for the purposes of operating, developing, and improving the Service" — the boilerplate any hosting service needs simply to store and deliver your files. The company stated that no machine learning was ever used on user content and that the moderation feature in question was never built, and its live "Principles of Content Protection" page commits that customer content is never used to train AI models and never sold.
The fair reading is not "WeTransfer trains AI on your files" — they say they don't, they moved quickly to fix the language, and there is no evidence otherwise. The fair reading is structural: when a service stores your files readably, its terms of service are load-bearing. A clause can change with a deploy, and your protection is their promise plus public pressure. With end-to-end encryption, that whole category of question dissolves — a provider cannot license, moderate, train on, or leak what it cannot read. Trust is not required, because trust is not part of the design.
Where Zenden fits — and where it doesn't
Zenden is a native desktop app (macOS, Windows, Linux) built on the opposite premise: by default, your file never lives on anyone's server.
Free, unlimited, direct. Drop a file, share a link; the recipient's browser connects straight to your machine over WebRTC and the file streams end-to-end encrypted — unlimited files, unlimited size, no monthly volume cap, and no account for sender or recipient. If a restrictive network (hotel Wi-Fi, carrier NAT, corporate firewalls) blocks the direct path, an encrypted relay steps in carrying only ciphertext — 2 GB per device per month included free.
The honest tradeoff: a live P2P transfer needs your machine online while the recipient downloads. WeTransfer's core convenience — upload, close your laptop, the file waits — is real, and direct P2P does not replicate it.
Cloud Link is the answer to exactly that, and it is a Pro feature. Zenden Pro ($8/month or $80/year) raises the relay to 100 GB/month and adds Cloud Link, new in Zenden 2.2: the file is encrypted on your machine, only the ciphertext is uploaded, and recipients get 48 hours to download after you have walked away — single files up to 4.5 GiB, 10 GB of active encrypted storage. Same fire-and-forget shape as WeTransfer, except the server holds bytes it cannot read.
Picking honestly
If you send a couple of small files a month and privacy is not a concern, WeTransfer's free plan still works — just know the 3 GB monthly total is the real limit, not the per-transfer number. If you send weekly and want hosted convenience with a polished brand, Starter is a fair product at a fair price.
If what bothers you is the structure — your files sitting readable on someone else's infrastructure, governed by terms that can change — then the fix is not a different cloud, it is a different architecture. Zenden's direct transfers are free and unlimited precisely because there is nothing to host; Pro exists for restrictive networks and for the send-and-close-your-laptop case via Cloud Link.
